This 5hr course is designed for experienced climbers who want to learn how to safely climb without a partner. Top rope soloing allows you to get more climbing time in, train efficiently, and enjoy the freedom of climbing on your own schedule.

What You Will Learn:

  • Proper setup and use of solo top rope systems (Petzl Micro Traxion, Silent Partner, or similar devices) along with how to utilize them according to manufacturer recommendations.

  • Rigging secure top rope anchors for solo climbing

  • Ascending and descending techniques

  • Safety systems and redundancy

  • Risk management and emergency self-rescue scenarios

  • Best practices and common mistakes to avoid

This is an advanced course. Participants should already be comfortable leading sport climbs and have solid anchor building knowledge. All necessary specialized equipment will be provided or demonstrated.

Gain the independence and efficiency that comes with mastering top rope soloing while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Please note that all climbing will be done with a back up, top rope belay.

Prerequisites:

Strong background in leading sport and trad up to 5.8 terrain. Knowledge of basic anchor system with gear and bolts. Knowledge of the bowline and munter mule overhand are recommended but will be taught.

  • Climbing equipment necessary to top rope solo and what is and is not recommended by the manufacturers of said gear.

  • Review of climbing knots, hitches, and progress capture devices

  • Bolted / natural anchor construction

  • How to protect yourself while top rope soloing

  • How to clean anchors

  • Basics of self rescue

  • A professionally trained and/or certified AMGA guide or instructor

  • All necessary climbing equipment including harnesses, helmets, climbing shoes, belay devices, ropes, and protection. We do recommend you do bring your own personal gear, but if you don’t want to, we will provide.

  • Professional guiding and instruction throughout the entire day

  • Resources to further your rock climbing journey

Excludes:

  • Transportation. You will be responsible for your own transportation to and from a designated meeting area

  • Gratuity of 10% - 20% is common for this industry.

  • Personal items such as food, clothing, backpack, etc. (Gear list will be provided!)

  • Entrance fees and parking fees (if necessary)

Itinerary

7:45am – Meet at the local climbing area.

8:00am – Introductions, small talk, and gear check / gear fitting.

8:20am – Head up to the crag!

8:30am – Ground school & classroom portion

  • Rappeling

  • Basic self rescue skills

  • Cleaning your climb

10:00am - Get some climbing in!
